Visit to ancient Stagira, Aristotle’s motherland
Aristotle, a great philosopher and Plato’s student, was born in the ancient city of Stagira. He later taught Alexander the Great. The settlement is very old, dating back to the 7th century BC, and was very important in the early Macedonian world.
There are only ruins left today, but walking through the site feels like stepping into the pages of ancient Greek history. The ruins look great against the blue of the Aegean Sea, giving visitors both a cultural and visual treat.
Exploring ancient Stagira
The archaeological site is on a small, green peninsula called Liotopi, right next to the modern village of Olympiada. You can still see parts of the walls, towers, gates, and homes that made up this proud ancient city.
You don’t just see things here; you also experience nature, history, and peace. Take the paths along the beach that are lined with pine trees and olive trees, and enjoy the beautiful views of the coast as you go.
You should plan to spend at least two to three hours walking around the area if you want to see everything it has to offer. The seaside walking trail is one of the most beautiful paths in Halkidiki.
